Extortion in Dhanmondi: Man detained after video goes viral

Police detained a young man after a video that went viral on social media showed him extorting money from the owner of a private car parked in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area last night.

The detainee was identified as Md Ashraful, 23, a resident of the capital's Hazaribagh area.

A team from Dhanmondi Police Station arrested Ashraful from Hazaribagh after being informed about the incident, said Kyashainu Marma, officer-in-charge of the police station.

A case is being filed in connection with the incident, the OC confirmed to The Daily Star this morning.

In the video footage, Ashraful is seen holding a receipt book and demanding money from the car owner at Jhigatola. An altercation ensued between him and the car's passengers.

When one of the passengers confronted him about the extortion, Ashraful retorted, "Yes, I'm doing it. Any problem?"

Then, a female passenger of the car asked for his name. He responded dismissively, "What will you do with my name?"

The footage also shows Ashraful becoming agitated upon realising he was being filmed. "Did the face come out well?... If you can even touch a hair on my head, go ahead and try," he is heard saying.

He eventually took the money from the car owner and handed over a receipt before leaving the scene.

It could not be immediately confirmed whether he was affiliated with any authorised parking leaseholder.

The video has since sparked widespread criticism on social media, with many voicing concern over rising incidents of extortion in public spaces under the pretext of unofficial parking management.
