‘Provide a clear explanation’

Says Tasnim Jara about Sarjis’s motorcade funding; Sarjis claims family, well-wishers chipped in
Tasnim Zara demands explanation on Sarjis Alam's convoy expenses

Tasnim Jara, senior joint member secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has called for a "clear and credible" explanation regarding the financing and management of the large-scale event marking Sarjis Alam's visit to his hometown in Panchagarh, where he arrived with a convoy of more than 100 vehicles.

In a Facebook post, Jara directly addressed Sarjis Alam, the chief organiser (north) of the party, questioning how such an elaborate event was organised despite his previous statements about financial hardship.

"I am writing this as a political activist of our party, from the perspective of our party's principles and transparency," she said. "Recently, your entry into your home district with such a massive convoy has understandably raised legitimate questions among the public."

She recalled Sarjis' earlier remarks, "Not long ago, you publicly stated, 'I don't have any money right now. I'm living on borrowed funds. This is the reality. I don't even have a wallet in my pocket.' Your simple lifestyle had impressed us and made our struggle more relatable to the people."

Jara then questioned how such a large-scale event could have been arranged given his past statements about financial constraints.

"In that context, the question of how such a large event was financed and managed is natural. Our party has promised to build a political culture based on transparency, integrity, and accountability. Therefore, our collective responsibility is to offer clear and credible answers to these questions."

She urged Sarjis to address the issue publicly, saying, "I hope you will consider this matter sincerely and provide a clear and acceptable explanation to the public. This will only strengthen our party's image in the eyes of the people."

Sarjis began his journey on Monday with a flight from Dhaka to Saidpur, before travelling the remaining 100 kilometres by road, accompanied for half the distance by a motorcade exceeding 100 vehicles.

However, he toured villages by a rickshaw van on the second day of his Panchagarh visit yesterday.

Meanwhile, in a reply to Jara's Facebook post Sarjis said his family members and well-wishers bore the cost of more than half of his motorcade during his visit to Panchagarh.

About the rest 50 vehicles, whose rental amount sums up to Tk 3 lakh, he said his family had the ability to pay the money even 50 years ago. "I believe, I can even run my election campaign just with the wealth my grandfather left for me," he said.
