Former minister Faruk Khan, 3 others remanded in murder case

A Dhaka court today placed former civil aviation and tourism minister Lt Col (retd) Mohammad Faruk Khan, former Awami League lawmaker Sadek Khan and two others on a three-day remand each in a case filed over death of 13-year-old Md Shamim at Dhanmondi during mass uprising on August 5.

The two others are Tanvir Hasan Saikot, general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League's Dhaka University unit, and former Dhaka South City Corporation Ward Councillor Hasibur Rahman Manik.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shahin Reza passed the order after Investigation Officer Md Monir Hossain, also sub-inspector of Dhanmondi Police Station, produced them with a five-day remand prayer.

Before that, the four were shown arrested in the case after SI Monir submitted an application in this regard.

In the remand prayer, the SI said all of them, along with other accused, were directly involved with the killing. So the accused need to be remanded to find out vital clues about the incident.

The defence submitted an application seeking bail along with cancellation of the prayer on grounds that their clients were implicated in the case just to harass them.

Upon hearing both the sides, the magistrate turned down the defence pleas and placed them on remand for questioning about the incident.

Shamim was shot dead in front of Dhanmondi Chilis Restaurant at Mirpur Road around 5:00pm on August 5 during the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement.

Following the incident, the victim's mother Jahanara Begum filed a case on October 3 with Dhanmondi Police Station against a total of 128 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
