A Kurigram court has acquitted journalist Anisur Rahman, who was accused under section 57 of ICT act, now Digital Security Act, for having a screenshot of an offensive Facebook post against the president and the prime minister in his phone.

Anisur, a journalist of The Daily Sangbad, was finally acquitted from the case today after three years.

Bangladesh Cyber Tribunal Judge Mohammad Assams Jaglul Hossain passed the acquittal order, his lawyer Ibrahim Khalil confirmed to The Daily Star.

On October 31, 2017, police arrested Anisur in a case filed with Roumari police station under ICT's section 57. The case was filed by Jubo League leader Shah Kamal.

Anisur was then sentenced to imprisonment for different terms and was later released twice by the High Court.

According to the case statement, Anisur Rahman took a screenshot of an offensive Facebook post against the president and prime minister on October 8, 2017 and kept it in his mobile phone.

Juba League leader Kamal got the screenshot from Anisur's phone through the Shareit application and lodged a complaint against one Suman Miah, who had posted the status on Facebook, with the Roumari police station.

The then officer-in-Charge (OC) of the station Jahangir Alam urged journalist Anisur Rahman to file a case under Section 57 accusing Suman but he refused to be the plaintiff.

Angered by this, OC Jahangir Alam included the journalist's name in the charge sheet and he got arrested, the case statement said.

He was finally acquitted from the case after three years.
