The youth must stay alert as fundamental groups tend to create discrimination among people in the name of religion, said rights activist Sultana Kamal yesterday.

“Do not get confused by their words. We have to understand how dishonest those people are who create discrimination,” she said at a programme on youth empowerment at Chhayanaut Sangskriti Bhaban in the capital.

Development organisation Oxfam arranged the two-day programme titled “Youth Conference in Bangladesh”. A six-member team from Indonesia also attended yesterday's programme.

Youths should help those who are historically left behind and know the reasons of departure of minority communities from Bangladesh, said chief guest Sultana, also chairperson of We Can Alliance that works to end violence against women.

Minority communities often leave the country because of land grabbing and illegal power practice, she added.

At the conference, young participants urged the government to create opportunity for them to participate in awareness building campaigns to end communal violence and build inter-faith harmony.
