Abdul Hamid has been elected president of the country for a second consecutive term.

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda made the announcement today two days after the deadline for submitting nomination paper of the presidential election expired.

Hamid has been elected president as no one else is running in the upcoming presidential election, the CEC said at a press briefing at the Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital.

Monday was the last day to submit nomination papers for the post of the president. The ruling Awami League just submitted the nomination papers for him.

Hamid took office on April 24, 2013, and his five-year term expires on April 23. According to article 123 of the constitution, presidential election should be held between 90 and 60 days before the five-year term expires.

Before becoming president, Hamid was elected as lawmaker seven times and also served as the Speaker twice.

He became acting president on March 14, 2013, after Zillur Rahman, president at the time, was admitted to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on March 10.

Zillur breathed his last at the hospital on March 20.

Hamid receives gazette of presidency

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda today met President Abdul Hamid and handed over the gazette of his presidency. 

Abdul Hamid was re-elected unopposed as the 21st President of Bangladesh earlier in the day, reports UNB. 

A 7-member Election Commission delegation, led by the CEC, went to Bangabhaban in the evening and congratulated President Abdul Hamid by presenting him a bouquet, said President's Press Secretary Md Joynal Abedin.

He said the EC delegation also apprised President Hamid about the overall activities of the EC.

On April 24, 2013, Hamid was sworn in as the 20th President of Bangladesh.
