Preventing question paper leaks

Words not enough

We have, once again, been assured by the education minister, of the government's all-out measures to prevent question leaks.

But regrettably, there have been too many incidents of question paper leaks in recent times for us to rest assured based only on words. In fact, his reaction came following pervasive allegations of question paper leaks in all public examinations like JSC, SSC and HSC, medical college and university admission tests, and government banks' recruitment exams that have dominated headlines in the last few years. Reportedly, the question papers of class-I and IV in the school final examinations have also been allegedly leaked, prompting the authorities concerned to postpone examinations even at primary schools.

Despite the education ministry taking several measures, questions have continued to be leaked. As evidenced by a report by Anti-Corruption Commission, officials of the education boards, BG Press and other government offices were also involved. Clearly, the problem is within. How does the government plan to bring all those involved, including government officials, to task?

This widespread malpractice surrounding board examinations is extremely worrying. We also have to wonder what prompts students as young as in class-I to seek leaked question papers. By allowing a culture where children learn to cheat at such a young age, what message are we sending to our future generations? The malpractice has gone on for far too long now and more urgent action is required. We hope that the minister's words are followed by prompt action.
