The district administration yesterday shut down Onnesha International School and College in the town on grounds of specific allegations, including terming as shaheed (martyr) former East Pakistan governor Abdul Monem Khan, who was shot dead by freedom fighters for betraying the Liberation War in 1971.

"Following an Education Ministry order dated January 16, we have closed the institution today [Sunday] as the allegations were proved," said Md Khalilur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Mymensingh.

The other allegations include using a flag adorned with star and the moon in the institution's monogram; not observing different national days with due respect; not following state rules; and not introducing the history of Bangladesh after its independence in the curriculum.

Visiting the institution at noon, this correspondent found only a few students, teachers and guardians on the campus.

Asked about the allegations, Nilufar Sultana, vice principal of Onnesha International School and College, said, "The dedication and logo of the institution can be corrected. And the other allegations are not totally true.

"We follow the government rules and pay VAT and taxes. All the national days and Pahela Baishakh are observed at the institution.

"The school is registered under the University of Cambridge. The country's history up to the Liberation War is included in our Bangladesh Studies subject and the same course is followed by many English Medium Schools of the country.

“We have complied with the administration's decision but earnestly want the reopening of the institution as early as possible considering the future of over 300 students in the institution from play group to A-Level,” the vice principal said.

Now the institution has a staff of 37 people including 27 teachers, sources said.

Meanwhile, the management of the institution yesterday issued a notice, saying, “Due to some unavoidable reasons, classes will remain suspended for a month, till February 28, 2017. You are earnestly requested not to lose hope and keep trust upon us. Our children are our asset and we will protect their interest with all strength.” 

Several students preferring not to be named said they want early steps for smooth running of their education.

“My son is scheduled to sit for his A-Level examinations from the institution this year. Who will take the responsibility of my son now?” said Dalia Islam, a guardian.

The institution was established at the house of Monem Khan on a 66-decimal of land at Natun Bazar in Mymensingh town in 1996. Nasreen Monem Khan, daughter of Monem, is its principal. 

The principal could not be reached as her mobile was found busy after repeated attempts.
