Three siblings, who were members of banned militant outfit Hizb-ut Tahrir, surrendered to Jessore police yesterday.

“Realising their mistake”, they went to Jessore Police Station around noon, Deputy Inspector General Monir-uz-Zaman of Khulna Range told reporters at the press briefing held in this connection.

Tanjib Ashraful, Tanjir Ahmed, and their sister Masuma Akhter were arrested in connection with militancy last year but were released on bail.

They then jumped bail.

Jessore police released a list of 11 fugitive militants on September 6. Names of six people of their family, including these three, were on the list.

Tanjib told the press that he used to hang out at tea stalls of Dharmatola in the town when he was a student of Botany at Jessore Government City College in 2014.

There, he got introduced to Hizb-ut Tahrir leader Sajal who gave him various books and leaflets on religious issues to read.

He gradually got involved in the organisation and later convinced his siblings to join.

Tanjib said after the recent brutalities carried out by militants in the country and the prime minister's and police high-ups' appeal to the militants to return to the right path, they had realised their mistake.

They repented and decided to surrender and try to lead a normal life.

DIG Monir said the case of the three siblings would be humanely dealt with as they wanted to leave the path of militancy and return to normal life. They will be provided legal assistance as well.

The DIG said six members of their family were involved in militancy and only three surrendered. He said the rest must surrender or face action.

Additional DIG Ekram-ul Habib of Khulna Range and Jessore Superintendent of Police Anisur Rahman were present at the briefing.

Anisur said Tanjib, who held the Moshref position in the organisation, was arrested on September 21, 2015. At that time, various books, leaflets, anti-state and -government documents, a laptop, and mobile phones supplied by Hizb-ut Tahrir were seized from his possession.

A case under Anti-Terrorism Act was filed against him with Jessore Kotwali Police Station. He had another case against him under the same act with Khilgaon Police Station in Dhaka.

He obtained bail in both the cases.

Tanjib's younger brother Tanjir Ahmed passed SSC from Jessore Cantonment College and HSC from Abdur Razzak College.

A case against him was filed with Abhoynagar Police Station. He was released on bail by a Juvenile court.

Anisur said Tanjib's elder sister Masuma passed SSC from Jessore Police Lines School, HSC from Abdur Razzak College and graduated from Dhaka University.

Her husband Nazmul Hasan is accused in two cases filed in connection with militancy.

They have another sister named Maksuda Khatun. She and her husband Shakin Ahmed are also wanted, Anisur said.
