Beanibazar upazila in Sylhet has been declared free from child marriage as the first upazila in Sylhet division. The announcement was made at a meeting held at Beanibazar upazila parishad office yesterday afternoon.

In the meeting, Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Jamal Uddin Ahmed was the chief guest. Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Joynal Abedin and Beanibazar Upazila Nirbahi Officer M Asaduzzaman were also present.

During the meeting, the officials declared that no child marriage would be held in Beanibazar upazila and strict action would be taken if anyone tried to arrange child marriage in the upazila. They declared the upazila to be the pioneer of child marriage free Bangladesh.

The divisional commissioner said child marriage is a curse. It has a bad impact on population growth and women's health, and also causes untimely death of women.
