‘Fancied ODIs, T20s came as a surprise’

Steve Rhodes took Bangladesh to a Caribbean tour in June after taking over charge of the national team in the same month. A rude awakening followed when the Tigers faced disastrous defeat in the Test series which started in July – just a month into his coaching tenure. The Tigers were then able to bounce back; taking both the ODI and T20I series and the coach, having returned to Dhaka with his troops today said that he was really proud to oversee the team's comeback, reiterating that the Test series had dented morale considerably.
"The Test series was not easy for us. Test performances really hurt us. Feeling really proud that we were able to make a comeback after that," Rhodes said.
Bangladesh lost both Tests within three days and the lowest point was when they were bowled out for just 43 – their lowest-ever Test score. However, ODI series saw the return of captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and the Tigers resurrected themselves. Tigers coach said that his team fancied the ODI series. Given that 50-0ver format is their favourite, the ODI series gave them the impetus to achieve better results and that paved the way for an unexpected T20I series victory -- a format that the Tigers have always found difficult.
"We fancied the ODI series and we were able to achieve that. But the T20 series came as a bit of a surprise," the coach said.
Having lost the first T20I, Bangladesh went on to win both matches in USA, Florida.
"We really played brilliantly in those last two matches. We are very happy to have won both the ODI and T20 series," he remarked.
The coach said that the series victories will give Bangladesh confidence ahead of the Asia Cup in September. The Asia Cup will revert to its traditional 50-over format this year after opting in 2016 for a Twenty20 competition. The head coach was confident of the Tigers' abilities in the 50-over format.
"I feel that the T20I and ODI series will give us confidence. Nothing better than to win. We played well in the ODIs so we will go into the Asia Cup with a positive mindset. But we don't want to be thinking too much. We could have easily won the ODI series 3-0 so from that point of view we are satisfied," Rhodes concluded.
