Shafi Khan Elenga mayor
BNP-backed candidate Shafi Khan was declared elected mayor of the newly formed Elenga municipality under Kalihati upazila of Tangail in the election held yesterday.
Shafi bagged 8,999 votes while his nearest rival rebel BNP candidate Shafiqul Islam Safi Talukder got 6,617 votes. Awami League-backed candidate Golam Mohammad Khan polled 5,966 votes.
Returning Officer Rafiqul Islam declared the election results in the evening. As many as 23,751 voters out of 27,328 cast their votes through Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) at all 12 centres in the municipality.
Our Jhenidah correspondent reported that AL-backed candidate Mahmudul Hasan Mamun was elected chairman of Sarutia Union Parishad in Sailkupa upazila of the district in a by election held yesterday.
Mamun, son of late chairman Raihan Uddin, secured 8,038 votes while his nearest rival candidate Tipu obtained 7,625 votes.
The seat fell vacant following the death of Raihan Uddin in December last year.
