The dead victim is Saifuzzaman Sujan, 30, reports our Natore correspondent quoting Nahid Hossain, superintendent of police in Natore.

Main opposition BNP called the daylong hartal for today demanding release of party leaders Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu.

Protesting today's death, BNP extended its dawn-to-dusk hartal for 72 hours till 6:00pm on Thursday, said Aminul Haque, general secretary of Natore district BNP unit.

Prior to the clash, police resisted the BNP men, who were marching towards Kanaikhali, at Uttara Super Market, said the SP.

As the BNP men moved forward defying police ban, the clash erupted around 11:00am because the Awami League men were there.

The ruling party men were staging an anti-hartal campaign at Kanaikhali when the opposition activists reached there with a procession, said the SP Hossain.

Both of the party men hurled brick chips and stones targeting each other during the clash that left six people injured, the SP added.

At one stage, the clash turned into a gunfight, leaving five more AL-BNP men bullet hit.

Sujan was rushed to Mission Hospital in the district where doctors declared him dead.

The other injured were admitted to the hospital. Two of the injured were referred to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital as their condition stated to be critical.
