Hemlock Society

societyPlot: A school teaches its students how to commit suicide effectively. A suicidal girl enrolls there and develops an unusual bond with the school's founder.
Review: His debut film, Autograph (2010) and later Baishe Srabon (2011), raised the audience expectations for Srijit Mukherji's latest film, Hemlock Society (2012). He has surprised us by his commercial success with 'alternative cinema'. Parambrata Chatterjee (Baishe Srabon, Bhooter Bhobishshot, Kahaani) gives another charismatic performance as the founder of Hemlock Society- Ananda Kar. Mainstream actress Koel Mullick plays Meghna, who tries to commit suicide after a brutal breakup. There's a sharp contrast between the world within Hemlock society and the world outside, much like that between theatre and reality. Dipankar De plays Meghna's father who is detached from his daughter's life. Ananda's witty remarks and Sabyasachi's cameo appearance as a Hemlock Society instructor added a comic layer to the film. The concept of the film is similar to the real-life Hemlock Society USA. We can't say that this film has met the high expectations of the audience. The undecipherable heavy accent of Koel Mullick can glue your eyes to the subtitles. However, songs of this film like Anupam Roy's 'Phiriye Dewar Gaan' and Lopamudra Mitra's 'Amar Mawte' are sure to haunt the viewers for some time.

Weakness: Loose pacing
