Crimes on rise in Khulna city

Law and order is deteriorating in Khulna city with resurfacing of criminals, following the withdrawal of the joint forces. A number of crimes were committed in the city over the last few days and people are feeling insecure.

Police arrested five young men and recovered from them a loaded revolver and three bombs, when they were preparing to commit a robbery on last Tuesday at Moulvipara. The arrested are Ripon, 26, Suman, 25, Rony, 25, Prince, 28, and Taju, 22.

Khalishpur police arrested on the same day another criminal, Sumon, 30, when he was about to shoot a man who had refused to pay toll. Police recovered a pipe-gun and a cartridge from Sumon.

On last Wednesday police arrested Nahid, a hardened criminal. He was arrested from the Picture Palace crossing when he was collecting tolls from roadside clothes sellers. Three of his associates managed to escape. Police said Nahid and his gang members had given death threat to a grocer of Moulvipara who had refused to pay Taka 10,000 as toll.

Armed cadres of the outlawed New Biplobi Communist Party (NBCP) kidnapped at gunpoint on Wednesday evening Yusuf Ali, manager of the farmhouse of Ali Asgher Loby MP. The farmhouse at Gangarampur union of Batiaghata upazila was raided by NBCP ( Mrinal group) armed cadres. They kidnapped Yusuf from the farmhouse. Police recovered him in a critical condition from NBCP's stronghold at Rudagaha union of Dumuria upazila on Wednesday midnight. The kidnappers broke Yusuf's two legs and two hands. "They demanded a huge amount of money from me which I refused to pay," Yusuf said. He is undergoing treatment at the KMCH.

Apart from the major crimes, there have been many incidents of mugging, burglary and eve teasing in different wards of Khulna Metropolitan City. Cadres of the ruling party are trying to restart illegal businesses like drug trafficking and smuggling, alleged some businessman of Khulna bazaar. A businessman dealing in construction materials at Station Road has alleged that he had been given death threat several times over phone for not paying toll.

Police are outnumbered by the criminals in the city streets, said some residents.

Police patrol parties are hardly seen in the crime-prone areas at night.

However, senior officers of the Khulna Metropolitan Police have said that they are working hard to curb crime.
