Protests over Ctg committees: Students postpone blockade for 24 hours

Members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, demanding the cancellation of three newly-formed committees, have postponed their blockade in Chattogram's Lalkhan Bazar for 24 hours.

Chattogram Metropolitan Committee Joint Convener and protester Chowdhury Siam Ilahi told The Daily Star, "We had a discussion with the central committee at 9:00pm tonight. Based on their assurances, we have decided to suspend all activities for the next 24 hours."

"In Chattogram, a total of 754 members were appointed across three committees. Out of them, around 30 of us have resigned," he said.

"If our demands are not met within the timeframe, we will go for tougher movement," he added.

The blockade, which lasted for two hours from 1:30pm to 3:30pm, included students who had resigned from the newly-announced committees.

There was a huge traffic congestion on both sides of the Lalkhan Bazar intersection due to the blockade.

Earlier, the students held a press conference at Chattogram Press Club, where they placed a three-point demand.

Their demands included the cancellation of the new committees by 3:00pm today, punitive action against accused individuals, and the disclosure of the names and identities of those influencing the committees within three days.

On Monday night, Central Committee Convener Hasnat Abdullah and member secretary Arif Sohel approved the three committees for Chattogram metropolitan, north, and south districts for the next six months.

A total of 754 individuals were named in these committees.

Siam Ilahi earlier told The Daily Star, "We had previously submitted a written complaint to the central committee, identifying individuals involved in extortion using the student movement's name. However, instead of taking action against them, they were given key positions. In protest, I have resigned."

The speakers at the press conference had alleged that the new committees had been formed by sidelining the students who were actively involved in the movement.

They claimed that members of the banned Chhatra League had been included in the committee and individuals accused of harassment were given positions.

The protesters also alleged that religious minority students were not given due representation in the new committees and that female activists had been overlooked.
