JCD ends Shahbagh protest demanding justice for Shammo

Demonstrators blocked key intersection, sought arrest and trial of accused

Leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) concluded their protest at the Shahbagh intersection around 5:20pm today, after staging a demonstration demanding justice for the murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo.

The protest was aimed at condemning what they called negligence in the investigation and pressing for the immediate arrest of the main accused, along with all others involved.

The demonstrators demanded exemplary punishment through a fair trial and called for a safe and secure campus environment.

They also demanded the resignation of the vice-chancellor and proctor of Dhaka University, holding them responsible for the deteriorating campus security situation.

The rally began around 4:00pm, during which JCD activists blocked the busy Shahbagh intersection, disrupting traffic for nearly one and a half hours.

Alongside the Dhaka University JCD unit, activists from Jagannath University, Tejgaon College, Dhaka College, Titumir College, and various other educational institutions under Dhaka-based and Dhaka Metropolitan JCD units participated in the demonstration.

Top JCD leaders, including the organisation's President Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasir Uddin, were present at the program and addressed the gathering.

Shammo, a student of the Institute of Education and Research of the 2018–19 session, and literature secretary of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal's Sir AF Rahman Hall unit, was stabbed to death near Suhrawardy Udyan on May 13 following an altercation after a motorcycle collision
