Five men were detained by locals in Narayanganj city this evening and later handed over to police on suspicion of being activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), a banned student organisation.

Nasir Uddin Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Sadar Model Police Station, confirmed the incident.

However, police did not disclose the identities of the detainees.

Witnesses said a group of youths surrounded five young men at Central Shaheed Minar in Narayanganj city around 6:00pm accusing them of being linked to BCL.

They were handed over to police.

"To prevent any unusual situation, we took them into custody and brought them to the station," said the OC.

The five detainees are still in police custody till the filing of this report around 9:00pm.
