Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sazzat Ali yesterday instructed members of the police to maintain maximum vigilance regarding the activities and possible subversive acts of banned political parties.

"Extreme vigilance should be exercised regarding the activities and sabotage attempts of banned political parties. We must work with utmost professionalism to ensure public safety and service," he said while addressing the DMP's monthly crime review meeting at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium in Rajarbagh.

Noting that the police are a well-disciplined force governed by laws and regulations, he urged members to discharge their duties with the highest level of professionalism.

"We should be polite in our interactions with the public," he said.

"We must uphold the highest standards in appearance, conduct, service, and determination. There is absolutely no room for unprofessional behaviour or negligence," he added.

The DMP Commissioner also instructed every police station to form dedicated teams focused on investigations, narcotics control, and the recovery of stolen items.

"Efforts to curb crime must be intensified, and case disposal rates must improve," he said.

He acknowledged, however, that all DMP members are striving to fulfil their responsibilities while maintaining high morale and professionalism.

At the meeting, Additional Police Commissioner (Admin) Faruq Ahmed emphasised the need for law enforcers to regularly update tenant information by visiting every household.

Joint Commissioner (Crime) Md Faruq Hossain presented an overview of the crime situation in April 2025, covering incidents such as robbery, mugging, theft, burglary, murder, unnatural deaths, road accidents, violence against women and children, rape, and the recovery of drugs and illegal weapons.

The DMP Commissioner issued several directives based on the presented data.

FORMER BHALUKA MP ARRESTED

Police have arrested two individuals -- Kazi Uddin Ahmed Dhanu, former MP from Mymensingh-11 (Bhaluka), and SM Kamal Haider, a close associate of former DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh -- in connection with separate murder cases in the capital.

Dhanu was detained around 3:00am yesterday in Aftabnagar, said Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

He is the 14th accused in a case filed on August 26, 2024, over the death of 18-year-old Mohammad Arif, who was shot during a protest in Jatrabari on July 19 and later died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Dhanu is also named in three other cases related to the same protest movement.

On Wednesday, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested SM Kamal Haider in connection with another protest-related killing, said CID's Special Superintendent of Police (Media), Jasim Uddin Khan.

The case concerns the fatal shooting of protester Abdullah Siddiq in front of Patam Restaurant in Dhanmondi on August 4 last year. According to the CID, CCTV footage and witness statements indicate Haider's involvement.
