MATS students launch sit-in protest at Central Shaheed Minar

Medical Assistant Training School (MATS) students tonight launched a sit-in protest at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka to press home their four-point demand.
"We will stage a sit-in protest at the Central Shaheed Minar until 12:00pm tomorrow [Monday]. If our demands are not met within this timeframe, we will begin an indefinite hunger strike from noon," Md Mujahidul Islam, central coordinator of General MATS Students' Unity Council.
The announcement was made by Md Mujahidul Islam, central coordinator of General MATS Students' Unity Council, at a press conference held on tonight 9:00pm at the Raju Memorial Sculpture area of Dhaka University.
Mujahidul also said that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare once again assured them of fulfilling their demands and sought three days time to publish the recruitment circular.
As the ministry has not provided any resolution or specific timeline for addressing the other three demands, the MATS students have decided not to withdraw from their protest, said Mujahidul.
They will continue their sit-in at Shaheed Minar overnight and wait until noon the following day.
If their demands remain unmet, they will begin an indefinite hunger strike from tomorrow.
Mujahidul also said at least 60 students were seriously injured when police dispersed their march in front of Shikkha Bhaban in the evening.
Condemning the police attack, Mujahidul said, "We strongly denounce and protest this assault."
The same police, who launched this unprovoked attack today, had also carried out attack and opened fire on students during the July uprising during the fascist Hasina regime, he said.
"We demand that those involved in this attack be identified and brought to justice," Mujahidul added.
