A Jamalpur court yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife over dowry in 2023.

The convict, Ujjal Mahmud, 28, is from the Sadar upazila.

Judge Muhammad Rafiqul Islam of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict. The court also fined the convict Tk 50,000 and acquitted 12 other accused, finding no evidence of their involvement.

According to the case statement, Ujjal married Tahmina Jannat, daughter of Ibrahim Khalil of Deghalkandi village in Madarganj upazila, in 2023.

After the marriage, Ujjal demanded dowry from Tahmina, but she refused to bring money from her father, for which she was subjected to physical and torture.

On the night of April 18, 2023, around two months after their marriage, Ujjal beat Tahmina, demanding Tk 5 lakh, and killed her at one stage. On April 19, 2023, Tahmina's father filed a murder case with Madarganj Police Station in this regard.
