Govt strengthens security ahead of Eid, Independence Day; no parade on March 26

The government has taken extensive security and logistical measures during Ramadan, and ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr and Independence Day on March 26.

Nasimul Ghani, senior secretary at the Home Ministry made the remarks today after a meeting on law and order and security measures ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr and Independence Day.

"Ramadan is ongoing, and Independence Day is approaching on March 26, followed by the Eid holidays. We have analysed whether there are any security threats related to these events.

"The Victory Day parade was not held last year, and there will be no Independence Day parade this year," he said.

"Advisers have said that we are in a wartime mode. We are not in a celebratory mood," he said while addressing reporters after the meeting in response to a query about the parade cancellation.

Asked about security threats surrounding March 26, Ghani replied, "At present, I do not see any security risks."

Authorities have also taken steps to curb extortion and street crimes in transport hubs.

"We have directed officials to prevent extortion and snatching in areas where passengers will be traveling. Measures have also been taken in shopping malls as per the police commissioner's previous instructions," he added.

The meeting also addressed concerns about theft and burglary during Eid, when many residents leave Dhaka.

"Security will be tightened in residential areas, and surveillance will be stepped up to prevent crime.

"Our preparations are comprehensive, and recent policing efforts have been effective. We are confident that we can handle any situation that arises," Ghani added.

Meanwhile, Ghani said that discussions were held with representatives of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) to ensure timely wage disbursement for workers.

Regarding phased leave for ready-made garment workers, he added, "That is a possibility. The details will be worked out, but we have stressed that wages must be paid on time and no property should be damaged."
