A group of women staged a demonstration this afternoon protesting recent attacks on women, and intimidation and violence against them.

The protesters gathered in front of the National Parliament Building, on the side of Manik Mia avenue. They held banners and placards expressing their demands for safety for women and dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs, reported our senior photojournalist from the spot.

"Stop violence against women" read one banner, while another called for the resignation of the home adviser. Another called for "No Mob Justice", while others still called for an end to moral policing.

The demonstration eventually moved towards Asad Gate, while the protesters' presented their demands to the media via a press release.

"Women are not safe in Bangladesh. In recent months there have been alarming incidents of harassment, abuse, rape, lynching, cyberbullying against women all across Bangladesh and from all walks of life. There is no scope to see these as isolated but part of an established pattern of intimidation and violence against women," said the press release.

"We refuse to live in fear," said the release, adding that an interim government, which came to power through a mass uprising and people's demands for justice, freedom, anti-discrimination in which many women were active leaders, organisers, and participants, has failed to honor those promises and aspirations.

"They have not taken any meaningful measures to stop and address these events and bring under the purview of the law those involved in these repeated attacks against women which has only emboldened those who are organising such hate crimes," read the release.

The protesters' five-point demands include the removal of the home adviser from his post.

There other demands are that the interim government must perform its duties as a governing institution which it has failed to do so far and take appropriate and immediate measures to guarantee the safety of every citizen including women.

They also demanded that the government and law enforcement agencies must be held accountable for their failure to prevent ongoing mob attacks, lynching, targeted assault, harassment, and rape against women; as well as taking decisive action to stop them.

Another demand is that the media must stop spreading misinformation and take responsibility for shaping public perception.

They also demanded that effective measures be taken to eradicate and punish cyberbullying.
