Bangladesh can count on UN support in building equitable future: Guterres

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said the interim government of Bangladesh can count on the UN for its support in building a sustainable and equitable future for all.
"As the country undergoes important reforms and transition, you can count on the UN to help build a sustainable and equitable future for all," he said on X after his meeting with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus at his office in Tejgaon.
Guterres also thanked Muhammad Yunus, the interim government and the people of Bangladesh for their warm welcome.
They both flew to Cox's Bazar to share iftar with the Rohingya people, more than a million of whom were sheltered there after they fled military crackdown in 2017.
Earlier in the morning, Guterres held a meeting with Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain and Khalilur Rahman, high representative to the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh on Rohingya issues and priority affairs.
The secretary general expressed appreciation for the close cooperation between the UN and Bangladesh as well as for Bangladesh's generosity towards Rohingya refugees.
He expressed his solidarity with Bangladesh's reform and transition process, said a UN readout after the meeting.
Antonio Guterres thanked Bangladesh for its strong commitment to UN peacekeeping.
UN Chief Guterres and the foreign adviser discussed Bangladesh's ongoing transition and reform efforts too.
Guterres and Khalilur Rahman discussed the situation in the Rakhine state and the upcoming High-Level Conference on Rohingya and other minorities in Myanmar.
