5,500 new govt jobs likely

The government is likely to approve the creation of over 5,500 new posts across various ministries and agencies today, following proposals submitted by at least 10 ministries and divisions, officials said.
Of these, the Internal Resources Division under the finance ministry has proposed the highest number of 3,225 posts, including 373 cadre positions. A government agency under the Prime Minister's Office has sought approval for 2,127 posts, the second highest.
The proposals will be tabled at the 11th meeting of the Secretary Committee on Administrative Improvement, scheduled for 11:30am today, at the Secretariat. Cabinet Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid will preside over the meeting.
According to sources, the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs has proposed 45 new posts in its organogram. The Secondary and Higher Education Division has requested the creation of 55 posts for teachers and staffers who were previously employed at five educational institutions that have recently been nationalised.
The Power Division has recommended the creation of 59 posts. The commerce ministry has requested one post for the Bangladesh Embassy in Geneva, while the agriculture ministry has proposed nine posts for the upazila agriculture office in Dasar upazila of Madaripur.
The Secretary Committee on Administrative Improvement is a key policy-making body composed of secretaries from 14 ministries. It is responsible for reviewing and approving administrative reforms, including the creation or abolition of government posts and finalising recruitment rules. Any matter requiring cabinet-level approval is forwarded by the committee after preliminary scrutiny.
Officials said that the agenda for today's meeting has already been distributed to the relevant ministries and divisions.
In addition to proposals for new posts, the committee is expected to consider an amendment to the Bangladesh Civil Service (Age, Qualification and Examination for Direct Recruitment) Rules, 2014. The proposed change follows a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Public Administration held on April 20, which decided to recruit candidates through a special BCS examination.
A senior public administration ministry officialtold The Daily Star that the government has decided to hold a special BCS exam to recruit doctors.
Following the advisory committee's recommendation, the Public Service Commission has submitted a proposal to amend the existing rules. Once approved, the PSC is expected to advertise for the recruitment of 2,000 doctors. The official also mentioned that a similar initiative could be undertaken to recruit officers in the education cadre through another special BCS.
The committee is also scheduled to review a proposal to correct a clerical error in the Bangladesh Civil Service Recruitment Rules, 1981. Besides, it will consider approving the draft Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority Employment Regulations-2025.
