Woman arrested for killing husband in B'baria

A man was killed last night allegedly by his wife, eight days after their wedding in Brahmanbaria's Akhaura.

The victim, Mehedi Hasan, 27, of Burichang upazila in Cumilla, worked at a pharmacy in Akhaura town, said Akhaura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shami Uddin.

Jannat Akhter, 20, his wife, was arrested the next day.

The incident took place late Friday night in the Masjid Para area of Akhaura municipality.

According to the case statement, Mehedi and Jannat got married on May 9. Jannat was in a relationship with another man before they got married. On Friday night, she suffocated her husband with a pillow after sedating him with sleeping pills mixed in a soft drink.

Jannat called the house owner early Saturday morning, saying that her husband had fallen ill. When locals arrived, they found Mehedi lying unconscious on the floor. He was taken to Akhaura Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead, the case details added.

According to police, Jannat confessed to the crime when she was produced before a magistrate under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The court sent her to jail after recording her statement.

Mehedi's brother Abul Kalam filed a case against her with Akhaura Police Station this evening.

The body was sent to Brahmanbaria General Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
