Thrown from moving train: Victim files case, police launch drive to arrest accused

A case has been filed against one named suspect and six to seven unidentified assailants after a man was allegedly thrown from a moving train in Adamdighi upazila of Bogura on April 18.

The victim, Matiur Rahman, 40, an expatriate worker recruiter from Raninagar upazila, Naogaon, survived the fall.

Matiur filed a case yesterday with Santahar Railway Police Station, naming Sumon, 30, of Adamdighi upazila, and six to seven other unidentified attackers, said Officer-in-Charge Habibur Rahman.

In the case, Matiur said the criminals including Sumon attempted to kill him.

Quoting Matiur, his son Ahsan Habib said, his father was travelling from Bogura to Santahar on the Padmarag Express when the attack occurred.

"As the train neared Altab Nagar station, the carriage emptied out. At that point, six to seven masked youths confronted my father, asking about a man named Sajib, whom he had sent to Saudi Arabia 26 days earlier," Ahsan told The Daily Star.

When nearby passengers inquired about the altercation, the attackers claimed Matiur had stolen their mobile phones.

Matiur managed to unmask one of the attackers and identified him as Sumon, Sajib's brother-in-law, said Ahsan.

"One of them tried to stab my father, but the others intervened," he added.

The attackers then allegedly threw Matiur from the moving train. He clung to the door handle in an attempt to re-enter, but the assailants pushed him back.

A passenger in a forward carriage filmed the incident, and the footage later went viral on social media.

Matiur eventually lost his grip and fell onto the platform at Nasratpur Station, landing beneath the train. Miraculously, he survived as the train passed over him.

He received treatment at two local clinics and is now out of danger, according to family members.

The OC said police visited the victim's residence earlier today.

"Matiur claimed he had recently sent six individuals, including Sajib of Talshan village, Adamdighi, to Saudi Arabia. While five secured jobs, Sajib had yet to receive his work permit (Iqama), which led to threats from his relatives," the OC said.

He added that Sumon and others allegedly carried out the April 18 attack.

"We are conducting raids to arrest the accused," he said.

Attempts to reach Sajib's family for comment were unsuccessful, as his father's phone was found switched off.
