SC summons Dinajpur mayor

The Supreme Court yesterday summoned Dinajpur Municipality Mayor Syed Jahangir Alam to appear before it on August 24 and explain his alleged derogatory comments about one of its judges.
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court also issued a contempt of court notice against Jahangir asking him to explain as to why he should not be punished for the remarks.
Jahangir is the assistant organising secretary (Rangpur division) of BNP's central committee.
A six-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order after a petition was filed by four lawyers seeking necessary directives.
Other five judges are Justice Obaidul Hassan, Justice Borhanuddin, Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, Justice Md Abu Zafor Siddique and Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim.
During the hearing, the SC bench said making bad comments about a sub judice matter is not decent.
The High Court has delivered a verdict on former prime minister Khaleda Zia and she filed an appeal challenging the HC judgement, which is pending with the apex court. It is not decent at all to make badcomments about the pending appeal, said the Appellate Division bench.
Jahangir recently made comments on a YouTube channel about Justice M Enayetur Rahim, a senior judge of the Appellate Division, centring a judgement in a case against BNP chairperson Khaleda.
After that, four lawyers -- Mohammad Harun-Or-Rashid, Mahfuzur Rahman Roman, Md Moniruzzaman Rana and Shafique Raihan Shawon -- submitted the petition.
The SC also directed Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission chairman to immediately remove the video containing Jahangir's comments.
Lawyer Shah Monjurul Hoque appeared for the petitioners while Attorney General AM Amin Uddin argued on behalf of the state during the hearing.
