Rohingya shot dead in Cox's Bazar refugee camp, 2 held

A Rohingya man was shot dead during a clash between two rival groups over establishing supremacy at Ukhiya Rohingya camp in Cox's Bazar last night.
The deceased, Mohammad Rafiq, 33, was a member of refugee camp-8 (east) in Ukhiya and his family claimed that he was intellectually challenge, the police official said.
Two persons were detained in this connection, said Mohammad Fazle Rabbi, superintendent of police (SP) in Cox's Bazar and also acting commanding officer of the Armed Police Battalion-8.
Some eight to ten miscreants stormed at the block B-61 of the camp around 9:30pm yesterday and looked for their opponents, the SP said.
As the other residents of the block chased them following their suspicious movement, the miscreants opened fire, triggering a fight with the other group, he added.
At one stage, Rafiq came in the line of the firing and suffered serious injuries. He was declared dead at a local hospital, SP Fazle Rabbi also said.
Efforts are on to uncover the motive, he added.
According to the locals, the block B-61 members caught two of the attackers, who claimed themselves as members of Arakan Rohingya Army (ARA).
This is the second murder at the Rohingya camp within a week. On March 5, unidentified assailants killed Mohammad Nur, the head Majhi of camp 20.
