Neighbours cut off man’s ear in Moulvibazar over trifles

A 72-year-old man's ear was cut off allegedly by his neighbours yesterday centring an incident of cattle entering a paddy field in Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar.

A case has been filed with Kulaura Police Station in this regard, and police arrested two people in connection with the incident yesterday evening, reports our Moulvibazar correspondent quoting police.

The arrestees are Makku Miah and his father Chan Miah, 64, of Dhaliar haor in Pushainagar village of Joychandi union under Kulaura upazila.

According to the case statement and police sources, a cow belonging to Nagendra Ghosh entered the paddy field of Makku Mia in Dhaliar haor area on Friday (March 31) afternoon. When Narendra went to bring back the cow, Makku stopped him and at one stage, Makku and his relatives attacked Nagendra Ghosh with sticks and machete.

At that time, Nagendra's left side ear was cut off.

Apart from this, there are several wounds on different parts of his body, added the case statement.

Hearing screams, locals rushed to the spot and stopped the attackers.

Relatives and locals first took him to the upazila health complex and later he was admitted to Sylhet's MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

On the same night, Nagendra's wife Anita Rani Ghosh filed a case against four people, including Makku.

Nagendra comes from a family of martyrs in the Liberation War. According to locals, 14 members of the same family, including Nagendra Ghosh's father Naresh Ghosh, were killed in the 1971 Liberation War.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kulaura Police Station Abdus Salek said the two arrested persons have been sent to Moulvibazar jail after being produced before a court.
