A Dhaka tribunal today sentenced a man to death for killing a 14-year-old girl after rape in Sutarpara under Dohar upazila in Dhaka district in 2018.

Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 of Dhaka pronounced the verdict in absence of Ziaur Rahman, the lone accused, at the courtroom.

The tribunal also fined him Tk 2 lakh and asked the district magistrate to pay the money to the victim family by selling moveable and immoveable properties of the convict in the case.

The punishment of fugitive convict, hailed from Banaghat under Dohar, will be effective from the day of his surrender or arrest, said the judge in his judgement.

Earlier, the prosecution and state appointed lawyer completed their arguments and the tribunal recorded statements of 18 prosecution witnesses, including the complainant of the case

According to the case statement, on October 21 of 2018 the girl went to collect vegetables adjacent to her house. On her way back, Ziaur picked up the girl and raped her at a nearby field. Later, he killed the girl by slitting her throat.

The victim's father filed a case against Ziaur with Dohar Police Station in this regard.

After an investigation, Sub-Inspector Syed Mehedi Hasan of Dohar Police Station on March 12 of 2019 submitted a charge sheet against the accused.

During the investigation, Ziaur confessed to a magistrate narrating how he killed the victim after rape.
