A Dhaka court today sent three arrestees to jail in connection with the killing of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo near Suhrawardy Udyan late last night.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamshed Alam passed the order after Taufiq Hasan, a sub-inspector of Shahbagh Police Station, also the investigation officer of the case, produced them before the court with an application to confine them in jail, court sources said.

According to Masud Alam, deputy commissioner of Ramna Division Police, police arrested the three outsiders today. They are Tamim Hawlader, 30, Samrat Mallic, 28, and Palash Sarder, 30.

The victim's brother filed a murder case with Shahbagh Police Station, accusing 8-10 unnamed persons, confirmed Khalid Mansur, officer-in-charge of the police station.

The victim, Shahriar Alam Shammo, 25, was the literature and publication secretary of the Sir AF Rahman Hall unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.

Ashraful Islam Rafi, a fellow student, said Shammo, hailing from Ullapara in Sirajganj, was a student of the Institute of Education and Research (2018–19 session) and a resident of Room 222 of the dormitory.

Rafi said Shammo was riding his motorcycle near Suhrawardy Udyan when it collided with another bike. This led to an altercation and a scuffle. At one-point, unidentified individuals stabbed him in the right thigh before fleeing.

He was declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
