Faridpur man killed, two others injured in attack

A man was killed and two others injured in an attack allegedly carried out by their rivals in Fardipur's Bhanga upazila on Saturday night.
The deceased, Yasin Khalasi, 19, was a resident of Thanmatta village, said police.
Locals and police said there has been a longstanding rivalry between two groups over establishing supremacy in the area.
Yasin belonged to one of the groups, said local union parishad member Md Alamgir Sardar.
On Saturday night at around 10:30pm, Yasin, along with two of his friends, was sitting on a bridge over a canal in Thanmatta village, said Bhanga Police Station's Sub-Inspector Md Rifat Uddin, quoting locals.
At that time, some eight to ten people attacked the trio with sharp weapons and sticks. Hearing their screams, locals rushed there and rescued them. However, the attackers fled the scene, he said.
The three were first taken to local upazila health complex. As their physical condition deteriorated, they were referred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
Later, they were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). When they reached DMCH, on-duty doctors declared him dead, said SI Rifat, quoting the victim's family members.
The two other injured persons were admitted to the DMCH, he added.
As the death news spread in the area, fellow members of Yasin's group carried out reprisal attacks on their rivals on Sunday morning and vandalised and looted at least five houses in the same village, said SI Rifat.
Talking to The Daily Star, Yasin's father Jahangir Khalashi blamed their rivals for the killing and demanded punishment.
Contacted, Bhanga Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) confirmed the incident and said the body was kept at DMCH for autopsy.
The process of filing a case in this connection was pending till the filing of the report around 8:30pm tonight, he added.
