Zahirul Islam Selim, vice president of the Cumilla City unit of Awami League, was arrested early today from his residence in South Chartha area of Cumilla city.

Selim, also a former public prosecutor, was arrested on allegations of conspiring to create disorder through an online meeting involving former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Mohinul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Cumilla Kotwali Police Station, confirmed the matter to The Daily Star this morning.

He said, "The former public prosecutor is accused in a case related to an attack on the anti-discrimination student movement. Additionally, based on intelligence reports, he was arrested on the charge of creating disorder through meeting with Sheikh Hasina on online platforms and WhatsApp."

Selim is known to be a close associate of fugitive former MP Haji AKM Baharuddin Bahar and is the son-in-law of the late veteran Awami League leader and former MP Professor Khurshid Alam.

According to Kotwali police, "He will be produced before the court today."
