BSF detains Bangladeshi from Thakurgaon border

Members of Border Security Force (BSF) detained a Bangladeshi national yesterday afternoon from the Indian territory opposite to Dharmagarh border in Ranishankoil upazila in Thakurgaon, according to an official of Border Guard Bangladsh (BGB).

The detainee is Md Azijar Rahman, 40, of Shahanabad village in Ranishankoil.

Lt Colonel Tanjir Ahmed, commanding officer of BGB Battalion -50, told The Daily Star that patrolling members of the Ambari BSF camp under the 184 BSF Battalion detained Azijar around 2:00pm yesterday from a spot approximately 450 yards inside Indian territory near Pillar No. 373/1-S on charge of intrusion and took him to their camp.

"Following the incident, BGB authorities sent a letter to the BSF requesting a flag meeting to discuss the return of the detainee," Lt Col Tanjir told The Daily Star.

In response, BSF officials attended a Commanding Officer-level flag meeting, during which the BSF commandant detailed the allegations against the detainee.

The BSF official said a decision regarding the detained Bangladeshi would be made after consultation with their higher authorities.
