Detectives arrested seven members of a theft gang who used to break into prominent office buildings in Dhaka and loot cash and valuables.

A team of detectives arrested them during raids at Dhaka's Demra and Cumilla's Kandirpar area yesterday, Mahbub Alam, joint commissioner (DB South) of Dhaka Metropolitan Polic, told a press briefing at DMP media centre today.

The arrestees are: Jamal Uddin, Shafiq Bhuiyan alias Bacha, Shafiq's wife Mukta Akter, Jasim Uddin, Kader Kibria alias Babu, Shakil and Al Amin.

The gang drew law enforcers' attention -- while going over CCTV footage of Uttara's Paradise Tower where they broke into an office on June 11, he said.

The gang members first recon buildings as service seekers for couple of days and target an office.

At a suitable time, later, they enter the building, break the locks and loot cash and valuables, Mahbub said.

The arrestees admitted that they were involved in breaking into and looting offices in Adabar, Kakrail, Gulshan and Badda areas -- applying similar technique.

This gang used to loot offices in Chattogram in the past but started operating in Dhaka two to three years ago, said Badruzzaman Zillu, additional deputy commissioner (DB Uttara Division) of DMP.
