Three killed as microbus hits truck in Meherpur

Three people were killed and four others injured as a microbus hit a stationary dump truck in Gangni upazila of Meherpur last night.

The deceased were identified as Shahin Hossain, 25; his aunt Akhter Banu, 45; and the microbus driver, Jamal Hossain, 40, said Bani Israel, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gangni Police Station.

The accident occurred around 11:30pm on Meherpur-Kushtia road in Shukurkandi area when the victims were transporting Shahin's grandmother, Fazila Khatun, to Kushtia Medical College Hospital after her condition deteriorated due to diarrhoea.

She had initially been admitted to the Gangni Upazila Health Complex.

Quoting locals, the OC said, the microbus collided with a dump truck that was parked by the roadside. All seven people on board the microbus were critically injured.

Locals rushed the injured to Kushtia Medical College Hospital, where Shahin, Akhter, and Jamal died later.

Police have seized both vehicles involved in the incident.

Legal action will be taken if a formal complaint is filed by the families of the victims, the OC added.
