Driver killed, 10 hurt as bus rear ends lorry in Cumilla

A bus rammed into an iron rods laden lorry on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway killing its driver and injuring 10 others in Cumilla's Burichong last night.

The deceased is Biplob, alias Babu, 35, driver of the lorry, of Dinajpur Sadar, confirmed Moinamati Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Iqbal Bahar.

The accident took place Saturday evening in the Porihal area of Nimsar in the upazila.

OC Iqbal said a lorry carrying rods was heading to Dhaka from Chattogram. As it started to rain in the evening, the driver pulled over to the roadside and covered the lorry with tarpaulin.

At that time, a Dhaka-bound bus of Al Arafah Paribahan rammed rear-ended the lorry.

The impact crushed the lorry driver Biplob between the two vehicles, killing him on the spot. A portion of the bus was also severely damaged in the collision.

Locals rescued the injured and took them to Eastern Medical College.

Following the incident, Moinamati Highway Police visited the spot, recovered the body, the lorry, and the bus.

Legal proceedings regarding the incident are underway, added the OC.
