Six members of a family suffered burn injuries in an explosion while preparing for Sehri at a flat in Chandpur early today.

The incident occurred around 4:10am on the fourth floor of a six-storey building on Koralia Road.

The injured are Abdur Rahman, 65, his wife Shanu Begum, 55, their eldest son Imam Hossain, 40, his wife Khadija Akter, 30, their middle son's wife Diba Akter, 20, and their youngest son, Moin Hossain, 20.

Abdur, Shanu, Khadija, and Moin, who are critically injured, have been transferred to National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, while Imam and Diba are receiving treatment at Chandpur General Hospital.

Eyewitnesses suspect a gas leak caused the explosion when the family ignited the stove for preparing Sehri. The fire spread rapidly, engulfing multiple rooms, while three occupants in another room remained unharmed.

Neighbours rushed to control the fire and rescue the injured.

Md Mahmudul Hasan, doctor of Chandpur General Hospital, confirmed that four critically injured victims were referred to Dhaka due to extensive burns, while the other two remain under treatment locally.

Residents reported hearing a loud explosion, causing the building to shake.

A neighbour, Khorshed Alam Dhali, said they used water and blankets to douse the flames before rescuing the victims.
