The High Court on Sunday asked police to arrest in seven days the culprits who
attacked minority people and damaged houses and temples in Banshkhali upazila
of Chittagong on February 28 and March 3.

The court also directed the deputy commissioner of Chittagong to repair the
damaged houses and temples in Banshkhali in two months.

Meanwhile, police arrested six activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student
wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, in connection with the attacks after raiding
different areas in Banshkhali on Sunday.

The arrestees are Harunur Rashid, 35, Abdul Aziz, 30, Azam Meer, 26, Md Sagir,
42, Md Idris, 45, and Md Hanif, 48, Md Shahjahan, inspector (investigation) of
Banshkhali Police Station, told The Daily Star.

During Sunday's hearing, the HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury
Manik and Justice Mahmudul Hoque asked the government to inform by March 12 on
what measures it has taken following the incidents of attacks and vandalism.

The court also issued a rule upon the government to explain in 10 days why its
alleged inaction to take necessary measures during the incident should not be
declared illegal.

The court passed the order on a suo-moto rule following the reports published
on different media about the attack and vandalism.

The home secretary, inspector general of police, deputy commissioner and
superintendent of police of Chittagong, upazila nirbahi officer of Banshkhali
upazila and officer-in-charge of Banshkhali Police Station have been made
respondents to the rule.

The minority people came under attack allegedly by Jamaat-e-Islami activists
after a war crimes tribunal sentenced it Nayeb-e-Ameer Delawar Hossain Sayedee
for his crimes against humanity during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
