Says law and order committee

A meeting of the district law and order committee has expressed deep concern over gas crisis, ghost power bills, traffic jams, extortions, drug menace and incidents of robbery and murder.
The meeting was held at the conference room of the deputy commissioner yesterday.
Awami League lawmaker from Narayanganj-1 (Rupganj) constituency Golam Dastagir Gazi Bir Protik said traffic jams at Shimrail crossing on Dhaka-Chittagong highway, and Rupashi and Gausia on Dhaka-Sylhet highway have become a regular phenomenon.
He alleged that Siddhirganj municipality has been collecting tolls from vehicles at Shimrail crossing creating traffic jam, and demanded a halt to toll collection and extortion on highways.
AL lawmaker from Narayanganj-2 (Araihazar) seat Nazrul Islam Babu said the administration and police would have to work impartially for maintaining law and order in the district.
AL MP from Narayanganj-3 (Sonargaon-Siddhirganj) constituency Abdullah Kaiser raised question about the role of police.
He said a few days back local people of Pirojpur in Sonargaon caught an identified criminal of Bandar area and handed him over to police along with the arms recovered from him.
But the criminal was released later by a sub-inspector, he added.
Abdullah said a decision was taken about 15 to 20 days back to evict illegal traders of sand and stone from Kanchpur Bridge over Shitalakhya river but no effective step has yet been taken.
Vice President of Narayanganj Chamber of Industries Manzurul Haque said a serious gas crisis has been prevailing in the district for long.
But no effective steps have been taken to resolve it despite repeated complaints lodged with the Titas Gas authorities, he claimed.
Member of the district law and order committee and Awami League leader Shahidullah expressed concern at the incidents of murder and robbery.
He said Paikpara in the town has become a den of the criminals where two youths have been killed over drug-related incidents recently.
Narayanganj Press Club President Ruman Reza said people are now helpless before the organised land grabbers at Purbachal upashahar in Rupganj.
Besides, ghost power bills are being imposed on people, and no action has been taken despite complaints, he added.
Police Super Biswas Afzal Hossain said action would be taken if any police member is found to be involved in any crime.
Deputy Commissioner Md Shamsur Rahman said effective steps would be taken to solve traffic jam on Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
Besides, the authorities concerned would be informed about gas crisis and ghost power bills to solve the problems.
Sadar upazila Chairman Advocate Abul Kalam Azad Biswas, Siddhirganj Municipality Administrator Abdul Matin Prodhan, and Sonargaon Thana Awami League Joint Secretary Mahfuzur Rahman Kalam also spoke on the occasion.
