AL candidate wins by-polls in Sunamganj-4

Awami League led grand alliance nominee Md Matiur Rahman has won the Sunamganj-4 by-election held yesterday.
According to unofficial reports, Matiur bagged 79,719 votes while BNP-led alliance nominee former JS Whip Fazlul Haque Aspia obtained only 46,029 from votes cast at a total of 105 polling centres.
No untoward incidents were reported during polling other than Assistant Presiding Officer Abul Khayer being withdrawn from the Government Primary Training Institute voting centre on allegation of irregularities.
Deputy Election Commissioner for Sylhet division-Khondoker Mizanur Rahman, also the returning officer for the by-election told The Daily Star the election was held peacefully and there had been no reports of any major irregularities anywhere.
The constituency comprises Sunamganj Sadar and Biswambharpur upazilas and Mannargaon union of Doarabazar upazila with a total of 2,30,835 registered voters.
The seat at Sunamganj-4 went vacant following the death of Momtaj Iqbal on April 17. District JP chief Momtaj, standing as a grand alliance candidate, had defeated Fazlul Haque Aspia in the December election. She joined politics following the death of her husband JP's former minister Maj (retired) Iqbal Hossain Chowdhury.
The BNP led alliance lost all 19 seats in Sylhet division in the general election.
