Rangpur Ditrict and Sessions Judge's Court yesterday rejected the bail petitions of 16
supporters of former Jatiya Party (JP) lawmaker Mohammad Ali Sarker and sent them to Rangpur Central Jail.
They have been accused in a case filed with Baderganj Police Station on December 27 for attacking the motorcade of JP chief and former president HM Ershad at Badarganj Bazar where he (Ershad) had gone to campaign for his party candidate for the parliamentary election.
A number of relatives and supporters of Mohammad Ali Sarker got annoyed with JP Chairman Ershad as he had given Anisul Islam Mondal the party ticket for contesting the parliamentary election from Rangpur-2 constituency instead of Mohammad Ali.
All the 16 accused appeared before the court and sought bail, but judge Mizanur Rahan rejected their petitions and sent them to jail.
Mohammad Ali Sarker was elected MP from Rangpur-2 constituency on JP ticket in 2001.
