Poor quality milk
On 26th April 2008 morning, ETV showed one programme titled "Explosives" regarding the very poor quality of milk being marketed in our country. Apart from the TV presenter of the programme, it was attended by a doctor, one nutrition expert and a senior official of BSTI . It was mentioned:
1. The present quality of liquid milk being marketed in Dhaka city is very poor.
2. The milk is collected from remote villages of the country. Very often the containers are not properly cleaned. Sometimes these are cleaned with dirty river water.
3. The fat content of the milk should be min. 6%. but the milk available contains around 3.5%. Therefore the milk processing companies add "imported poor quality dry milk powder" to tone up the milk before marketing in packets through retail outlets.
4. Children are the worst sufferers. They take milk everyday. They are not getting proper nourishment. They are facing many ailments like stomach trouble, lack of energy etc.
5. The quality of the local "Condensed Milk" is also very bad. It was told that the govt. banned the production/marketing of this item some months ago. But the manufacturers got a "stay order from the court" and are marketing the product throughout the country.
6. Some grades of imported "Dry Milk Powder" are sub-standard and time expired. The govt. should strictly check the quality of this product before clearance is granted for marketing within the country.
It is therefore suggested that for health reasons the government should look into this matter and take urgent remedial action.
