Probe body finds no instigative elements in day 1 incidents
The one-member judicial probe committee of Justice Habibur Rahman Khan, formed to investigate the recent violence at Dhaka University, as of yesterday found no instigative element in the first day's incident.
"In the incidents of the first day, the commission so far found nothing that can be termed instigative," Justice Rahman said while talking to reporters at his Circuit House office yesterday adding that he would visit the spots today.
Rahman said no steps were taken so far to take the statements of the two detained DU professors-- Harun or Rashid and Anwar Hossain.
"Tomorrow [today] I will talk to the vice-chancellor and decide on the steps that can be taken," he added.
Rahman said the commission would also talk to the army men, who were in the camp that was garrisoned at the university's gymnasium. "But this will take time as the procedure to produce them before the court is different," he added.
"We are gradually advancing," Rahman said when asked about the progress of the commission's activities.
Commenting on the students' participation in the investigation process, he said, "The response from the students is very low. They did not turn up either for fear or any other reasons."
He, however, hoped that students' response would increase substantially when the university reopens.
DU Pro Vice-chancellor (VC) AFM Yusuf Haider Chowdhury, National University VC Syed Rashedul Hassain, DU former vice-chancellor AK Azad Chowdhury, Treasurer of Dhaka University Teachers' Association GM Chowdhury and Assistant Registrar Sheikh Md Shah Newaz gave their statements before the commission yesterday.
Seven persons including a student gave their statements in the first three working days of the commission.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) yesterday called upon the city-dwellers to assist them by providing information about the persons involved in the violence.
The DMP said identities of the information providers would be kept secret.
