Workers of four sugar mills in Thakurgaon, Natore and Jhenidah agitated yesterday demanding early declaration and implementation of wage commission.
Workers of Thakurgaon Sugar Mills demonstrated on the mill premises on Tuesday to press home their demand, reports our correspondent.
Suspending operation from 9:00am to 11:00am, over 100 workers of the mill brought out procession in front of factory. Parading entire mill area the procession ended in front of administrative building.
The programme followed a brief rally which was addressed by president of Thakurgaon Sugar Mills Workers' Union Jobaidur Rahman, worker's leader Masudur Rahman Rana and Saiful Islam.
The leaders urged the government to meet their demands for the sake of better life as the prices of essential commodities shot up in the last few months.
The workers of the mill will form a human chain and organise a workers rally on the mill premises today demanding the same, they said.
On Monday afternoon, workers of Panchagarh Sugar Mills observed the same programme at their mill.
The workers of Natore Sugar Mill and North Bengal Sugar Mill also observed a two-hour work abstention yesterday morning demanding implementation of the wage commission, reports our Natore correspondent.
The workers started their work abstention at 9:00am and took position in front of their respective sugar mills in Sadar and Lalpur upazilas.
The agitated workers of Natore Sugar Mill burnt the effigy of finance minister and also demanded the resignation of finance, commerce and industries ministers.
After the two-hour agitation, the workers decided to observe a daylong strike on February 15 in case of no initiative at government level.
Khandakar Shahidul Islam, president of the North Bengal Sugar Mill Workers Association said, they will also observed a full-day work abstention on February 15 if their demand is not met within the time.
