TV channels asked to avoid live talk shows

The military-backed caretaker government asked the private television channels to avoid telecasting all kinds of live talk shows, sources said.
The officials, however, said they did not impose any ban on telecasting live shows but the channels might be advised to be careful in telecasting live programmes.
Earlier On Thursday night, Ekushey Television authorities received a fax message, without mentioning the name and signature of the sender, from the administration to cancel its scheduled live popular programme Ekushey Somoy and Ekushey Raat.
Some other private channels also received similar instructions.
Following the direction, Ekushey Television authorities cancelled broadcasting of its live talk show Ekushey Somoy and Ekushey Raat.
Authorities imposed a ban on telecast of any sorts of talk show during the August violence last year. A few days later TV channels got permission to telecast talk shows on nine-point condition. But TV channels started to broadcast live talk shows frequently though the government suggested avoiding live talk shows.
Meanwhile, Channel 1 stopped audience question portion of its live talk show Nirbachito Khobor.
Information Secretary Jamil Osman yesterday told BBC that no media house has officially been given any such direction.
He however said the government advises them to maintain self-censorship during the state of emergency.
