Liquidity crisis and a lack of confidence among investors are the major reasons behind the current downtrend in the stockmarket, said the president of Chittagong bourse yesterday.
Fakhor Uddin Ali Ahmed, president of Chittagong Stock Exchange, was speaking at a news briefing on "current market scenario and new generation trading system" at Hotel Sarina in the capital.
The flow of fresh fund is important to increase liquidity and boost investors' confidence, said Ahmed.
He also said the CSE will start internet-based trading as soon as possible.
Al Maruf Khan and Tareq Kamal, vice presidents of the CSE, and Syed Sajid Hossain, chief executive officer of the bourse, were also present.
Ahmed recommended that the Securities and Exchange Commission reduce tax on transactions and fees of Central Depository Bangladesh Ltd (CDBL) to stabilise the market.
He said the barrier to investment of mutual funds should be lifted in a bid to properly utilise such fund in the market. The OTC market should get dynamism and the money of Bangladesh Fund is needed to be invested properly, he added.
