Ex-BNP MP, municipal chairman sued in Meherpur

Allegation of taking money on job promise

Former BNP lawmaker from Meherpur-1 Masud Arun and Meherpur municipality chairman Motassim Billah Motu and three others have been sued for allegedly taking money by promising job.
Motu is also district convenor of Jatiya party (JP-Ershad).
Awami League activist Anisur Rahman of Amjhupi village in Mujibnagar upazila filed the case with Mujibnagar police station Thursday night.
Police arrested Motassim Billah Motu on Friday from Meherpur jail gate soon after he came out on bail in other cases.
Sources said Motu is accused in 12 cases, all filed last year. He was arrested on June 6 last year.
The two others accused in the case are Meherpur district Jubo Dal president and former public prosecutor Maruf Ahmed Bijon, Meherpur Pouro BNP president Jahangir Biswas and Sahajahan Ali, a staff of Meherpur Zila Parishad.
Maruf Ahmed Bijon, now in jail, is elder brother of former BNP lawmaker Masud Arun. The other accused are absconding, police said.
In the case, Anisur Rahman, president of Amjhupi union Awami League, alleged that Masud Arun, Motu and Bijon took Tk 1.50 lakh from him in May 2005 assuring him a job of a primary school teacher. But they could not provide him with the job.
As he asked for return of the money, they threatened him with dire consequences, he alleged in the complaint.
Some sources claimed that Masud Arun is now in Dhaka. Known as a reformist BNP leader, Arun is accused in four extortion cases filed between January and September last year, police and other sources said.
Locals said Arun was not seen in his area since promulgation of emergency.
