Police-student clash in Barisal: 20 hurt

Twenty people including a teacher, four policemen and 15 students were injured in clashes between students and police on the campus of Barisal Shaheed Abdur Rob Serniabat Textile Engineering College yesterday morning.
The college authority closed the institution till June 18 and asked the students to vacate the hostel by afternoon, said Abdus Salam Shikdar, principal of the college.
Police lodged a case against 350 students and arrested 13 as of filing this report, said Zahangir Hossain, officer in charge of Barisal Kotwali police station.
Students of the textile engineering college in Barisal city organised agitation programmes on the campus to press home their demand for continuation of diploma engineering course at the college, arrangement for adequate appointment in government services and 30 percent quota for the diploma holders in BSc engineering course.
They held a peaceful rally on the campus and formed a human chain beside the adjacent road at about 8:00am. But some of the students suddenly started ransacking rooms of the college and vehicles on the road in front of the campus and tried to lock the academic and administrative sections of the college and block the road by felling logs, said police and witnesses.
Police interfered and brought the situation under control by charging baton, firing three rounds of rubber bullets and nine rounds of tear gas cells at around 9:00am, said Syed Taufiquddin Ahmed, commissioner of Barisal Metropolitan Police.
At least 15 students, a teacher named Shahidul Islam and four policemen including Assistant Sub Inspector Mohiuddin and constables Joynul Abedin, Saidul Islam and Sree Sajal were injured during the incident.
The injured cops were admitted to police hospital while the injured students, who received treatment at different private clinics, went into hiding to evade arrest.
Sub Inspector Kamalesh lodged a case against 350 students of the textile college on charge of creating obstacle to law enforcers' performing government duty, assaulting police and damaging public properties and holding illegal rally.
Police arrested 13 students -- Iqbal Hossain and Imran Hossain of sixth semester, Russell and Mong Rakhain of fourth semester, Rahmatullah, Sohel Rana and Hafizur Rahman Limon of third semester, Mehedi Hasan, Mainul Islam, Saidul Islam, Abdus Samad and Arifur Rahman of second semester, and Hafizur Rahman of first semester.
The court sent them to jail.
Principal of the college said academic council decided to issue show cause notices to Aminul Islam Mustafa alias Firoz Mustafa, Kaniz Fatema and Md Mojibur Rahman for provoking and forcing the general students in creating chaos on the campus.
The college authorities will also lodge case for damaging college properties, he added.
